Don't try to make you character "appealing". It's more about how their story holds up.

Try a little comic to explore the world and setting and you will have a better grasp of the character mindset.

Your piece has a lot of negative space. Try filling it or try out closer plans or titled perspectives.

From what I get, the first set is the Classic Mario from the Super mario show and the Classic Sonic from the SatAm cartoons.

The Second is the first appearance of Mario in an animated Movie (the Great mission to rescue Princess Peach) and the Sonic is from the Japanese animated intro Sega CD.
