That's actually a very nice power-up concept.
Maybe they could have forms matching the other dinosaurs and alts of the series?
(Rosalina could easily pass for a Space Plessie)

Do you draw over a character reference or do you use the pixel grid from start to finish?

This was a while ago but if I remember correctly. I drew an outline which I shrunk down and made a pixel outline for the Morrigan one.

For the others I basically drew out the shapes in pixels and then added details as I went along.

I looked at refrences for all three. The Morrigan one especially is basically just a remake of the game sprite.
